I built this sauna myself: the frame, the wool-blanket walls, the rocket stove, all of it. It packs into a small van, sets up in two hours, and turns a corner of your festival into the place people end up staying until two in the morning.
It travels from Amsterdam across most of Europe. Here's everything you need to decide whether it fits your event.
From the outside it looks like a party tent with a chimney sticking out of it. Inside there's a cubicle built from a frame and several layers of wool blankets (second-hands, rescued from being scrapped) with two wooden benches and a wood stove in the middle.
The stove is a simplified rocket stove, so it burns clean and efficient. But the important thing is that it runs cooler than a Finnish sauna. This is not an instant-sweat sauna. People stay in for an hour, sometimes longer. The heat is gentle enough to talk in, and that changes what happens: instead of a five-minute endurance test, you get conversation. Strangers who arrive separately leave as new friends.
Then they step outside into the cold (snow if there is snow, wind if there isn't) and come straight back in.
Over an evening, with people coming and going, roughly 20 guests will get a proper session. Eight fit comfortably at once; eleven if everyone is friendly about it.
| Footprint | Roughly 3 × 3 m for the structure |
| Space needed | Roughly 6 × 6 m of reasonably level ground |
| Capacity | 6 people comfortably, up to 8 at a squeeze |
| Session length | Around an hour ~ it's a slow sauna |
| Guests per evening | Around 20 |
| Setup | 2 hours |
| Teardown | 1 hour |
| Fuel | About one bag of kindling per evening — I bring it |
| Water | one bucket full |
| Power | Not required |
| Fire | Wood stove with a proper chimney. |
| Access | Accccess for a small van is easiest, but with a few helping hands it can be carried, hiked or skied to the spot |
| Lead time | Two months, ideally |
Me, Klaas. I come with the sauna and I stay with it :) That isn't an upsell, it's a condition. Partly for the practical reasons: the stove needs tending, the heat needs managing, and somebody has to keep an eye on how people are doing. And partly because I'm the one who'll be sitting in there talking to your guests about mountains, Crazy Camps, and whatever else comes up at midnight in a hot tent.
Also included: the sauna, the stove, the firewood, setup and teardown.
€300 for the first day, €150 for each additional day. Includes the sauna, the stove, the firewood, setup, teardown and me.
Travel is included within 250 km of Amsterdam. Beyond that it's €0.35 per kilometre, calculated one way. Also, ferry costs are never included. I'll travel roughly 1,200 km from Amsterdam — which covers most of Western and Central Europe, from Oslo to Milan to Kraków.
If you're a small, volunteer-run or first-year festival and the fee is genuinely the thing standing in the way, talk to me. I'm often willing to reduce or drop it. I get a lot out of these evenings, and Crazy Camps aren't a profit-making operation either.
What I'd ask for instead: my travel costs covered, vegan food and a place to sleep, the sauna named in your programme, some posts about it on your channels, and the freedom to tell people about Crazy Camps while I'm tending the fire. Say so in your first message and we'll work it out.
The Slow Sauna belongs at festivals and gatherings built around yoga, contact improv, ecstatic dance, authentic relating, personal development, conscious sexuality and tantra, soulful music, and the outdoors.
It works because it's slow. A warm, quiet space where you can only really sit and talk becomes the emotional centre of gravity. That's the effect you're hiring.
It's a poor fit for large commercial festivals wanting high-throughput wellness. Twenty people a night is twenty people a night.
The stove is enclosed and vented through a chimney. I'm on site the whole time it's lit, managing the fire and the heat.
Crazy Camp is a project of an association, and guests take part at their own risk under our standard terms. If your site requires vendors to hold public liability cover, mention it in your first message and we'll sort out what's needed before anything is agreed.
How far will you travel?
Roughly 1,200 km from Amsterdam. Travel is included within 250 km; beyond that, €0.35 per kilometre one way. Ferry costs are never included.
Do you need water or electricity?
A bucket of water, and no electricity. Just level ground, firewood clearance and somewhere to put it.
How many people can use it in one night?
Six to eight at a time, around an hour each, so roughly 20 guests over an evening.
Can it go somewhere a small van can't reach?
Yes, with help. It's been carried, hiked and skied into position before.
How far ahead should we book?
Two months is comfortable. Ask anyway if it's shorter; I might be free.
Is it self-service?
No. I come with it and stay with it, for safety and because that's half the point.
Tell me what your event is, when and where it runs, roughly how many people you're expecting, and whether there's anything cold nearby to jump into. I'll come back with a straight yes or no and a price.
